This is an excellent account of what many tutors, I guess, feel is an important aspect of our courses and of the commitment of some students to same type of course for many years. We need to think about 'progression' in the light of this. For many students it doesn't mean reaching a higher level, but deepening and broadening their knowledge and continuing to relate to other people through difficult times. For many students the course becomes something stable in their lives when other things threaten their sense of well-being - e.g. illness, bereavement and other problems.
